Heating bearings is a good way to temporarily expand the bearing rings to facilitate mounting without the use of excessive force that could damage bearings. Heaters can be used for mounting or dismounting by efficiently heating bearings and workpieces (gears, sprockets) large and small.

Normally, a bearing temperature of 150 F (83 C) above that of the shaft is sufficient. Unless otherwise specified, open bearings should never be heated to a temperature greater than 257 F (125 C).

Bearing heaters produce strong alternating magnetic fields that induce eddy currents in the metals. The currents cause rapid and efficient heating of the component. ... Bearing heaters offer a fast, safe and efficient way to mount straight bore bearings on to shafts.
